How does LED Phototherapy work?


While we often associate light exposure with negative effects such as skin ageing and damage, light also has many positive influences on the body. It helps us produce vitamin D, provides energy and serotonin. It can also encourage cell growth and collagen rejuvenation.


The spectrum of light is grouped into different categories, some you can see, such as red and blue light, and some are invisible such as UV and near-infrared. The differences between the positive and negative effects of light are the amount and the parts of the spectrum you’re exposed to. Different types of light stimulate different responses, so while ongoing exposure to UV is very damaging, controlled levels of near-infrared, blue and red light are clinically proven to be beneficial.


Using LEDs to deliver specific types of light can provide that control, helping to maximise their effects.


In our Aesthetic Clinic here in Cornwall, we have chosen Dermalux®, which uses the highest quality LEDs, expertly aligned helping to deliver each wavelength at a specific, measured energy output, intensity and dose. Uniquely, Dermalux® uses leading-edge LED technology, which allows all three wavelengths to be used at the same time. This means you can enjoy enhanced results, while still keeping treatment times to a minimum.

The procedure


The treatment is pain-free and suitable for all skin types with an excellent safety profile. Each treatment lasts approximately 20 minutes and is a pleasant, relaxing experience in which you’re placed under the light. During and after the treatment your skin may feel warm and you may notice some redness, but this will resolve quickly. Your practitioner will advise on the best combination of light and course of treatment depending on the condition of your skin, but you will need a minimum of 6 treatments over a 6 week period. Your practitioner also may recommend an evidence-based skin care regime in order to enhance your results.

Is there any pre- or post-treatment advice?


There are no specific pre-treatment guidelines. Post-treatment, normal skincare regimes can proceed immediately, and the results will be enhanced by the use of an evidence-based anti-ageing skincare regime. It is also recommended that you use a high-level broad spectrum UVB|UVA sun protectant to reduce the impact of photo ageing.

What results can you expect?


Dermalux® uses three, evidence-based wavelengths of near-infrared, blue and red light which are absorbed into the skin at different levels. The wavelengths provide energy and stimulate a variety of natural processes of the skin such as:

How Dermalux® LED Phototherapy works 
Clinically proven wavelengths

Dermalux® systems use only clinically proven wavelengths delivered at the optimised intensity and dose enabling effective photobiomodulation of targeted cells and skin tissue with proven results.

Dermalux® Blue 415nm

Blemish fighting blue light destroys the bacteria which causes spots and helps in the prevention of breakouts.


Exposure to Blue light at 415nm interacts with the pacnes bacteria creating a photodynamic reaction which results in bacterial destruction. It also helps to balance sebum production and improve skin clarity. Applied in combination with Red and Near Infrared light, the Dermalux® Tri-Wave treatment offers enhanced anti-blemish results and is excellent as a post treatment procedure to help minimise breakouts and reduce redness.

Dermalux® Red 633nm

Rejuvenating Red light accelerates cell renewal and repair, boosting collagen and elastin synthesis for smoother firmer skin.

Exposure to Red light at 633nm is clinically proven to increase the body’s natural form of cellular energy (ATP) which in turn "kick starts" cells to regenerate faster. Red light is potently absorbed by fibroblasts increasing collagen and elastin synthesis and boosting natural hydration levels. It also improves blood flow for increased tissue oxygenation and the lymphatic systems to eliminate toxins. Dermalux® Near Infrared 830nm 

Repairing Near Infrared light is the most deeply absorbed wavelength and works synergistically with Red light for optimum rejuvenation results.

Exposure to Near Infrared light at 830nm triggers the skins anti-inflammatory processes to accelerate repair and reduce irritation and redness. Near Infrared light builds strength and integrity for compromised, environmentally damaged and sensitive skin conditions. It is also clinically effective in the treatment of age spots and hyperpigmentation.
